Studied under Walter Gropius while at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. Studied under Paul Rudolph while at GSD. Recommended to work with Gene Leedy by Rudolph, then writing critic at Harvard’s GSD.

University of Florida’s College of Architecture Dean Turpin Bannister saw a display of Merritt’s work at a Florida American Institute of Architects (AIA) convention in 1959 and brought him to the University of Florida.
